Eating Disorders Treatment

Part of learning to love oneself is recognizing it is not one’s weight or one’s looks that defines one’s true worth.

Eating disorders are psychological disorders that require specialized care and are often accompanied by feelings of depression and anxiety. In fact, it is not uncommon to have a co-existing mood disorder. Along with difficulty managing emotions, there is a focus on food, weight and body-image. Eventually, the behaviors that signify an eating disorder disrupt ones functioning and may also lead to serious medical problems. Those with Eating Disorders typically have other underlying emotional and psychological issues. The onset of an eating disorder is influenced by a combination of environmental, psychological, cultural, and genetic factors. It is those issues that one is attempting to “cope” with through the eating disordered behaviors. I often will say to my clients that an eating disorder is a disorder of the self. Working on improving self-esteem and self value, improving coping skills and relationship skills is paramount in the treatment process.

I recommend scheduling an appointment for an evaluation if you or a loved one may be struggling with an Eating Disorder. After the evaluation, I am then able to make recommendations with regards to what level of care you may need. Levels of care range from inpatient hospitalization to outpatient care. Due to possible medical complications, I believe strongly in collaborating with other practitioners when one is recovering from an Eating Disorder.
